Tallinn City Walls

Tallinn Estonia Travel Guide

The medieval walls that surround a portion of Tallinn Estonia were constructed for defensive purposes.

The initial wall, known as Margaret Wall, dates back to 1265.  It was less than 5 metres high.  The Tallinn City Walls were later enlarged and extended.

Visitors arriving in the Old Town from a cruise ship or ferry will pass through the "Great Coastal Gate" next to the "Fat Margaret" tower.

Fat Margaret is the largest of several defensive towers that can be found along the walls.
